A fabulous varied night of entertainment on Wednesday 23 Feb will benefit fellow Queenslanders devastated by floods. Popular club entertainers who are donating their services free for this concert include Greg Andrew, well known for his amazing Elton John ‘I’m Still Standing’ shows, Soul Temptation Duo and the Kooltones Duo who will be singing songs from Grease. They will be joined by some of the Sunshine Coast’s favourite entertainers such as Blossom Goodchild, Gail Evans, Ian Mackellar, Michael Healey, Andrew Healey, Summer Bowen, Libby Hendrie and dancers from the Noosa Professional Dance Academy.

Lyn Harris and Karen Philips of the social support organisation, United Synergies, came in to tell us about Booin Gari, the four-hour Indigenous celebration they are putting on for the fourth year. It may still be postponed on the appointed day, 18 January. “It’s a celebration of Indigenous history and culture on the Sunshine Coast and it’s very much an interactive and positive fantastic feel to the event.”

“Intervention will free land up for miners”

Award-winning investigative journalist, Chris Graham, former editor of The National Indigenous Times, is waging a campaign to inform the public that the ABC’s “Lateline” television broadcast a fraudulent report on sexual abuse of children in the Northern Territory that triggered the Intervention.

Maurice Japarta Ryan (Japarta is his Gurindji skin name) has started the First Nations Political Party in the Northern Territory which is seen as having a good chance to decide which of the bigger parties wins government in the Top End next year because a third of the Territory’s people are Aboriginal. Mr Ryan is the son of Vincent Lingiari, the stockman who led the walk-off from British-owned Wave Hill station in 1966.

Michael Butler is Samantha’s white partner who’s been given a skin name and has been taught the didgeridoo by Aboriginal masters. He also makes films about Aboriginal culture which he uses to educate.

The Curves are a collaboration of some of the south-east’s most interesting musical prospects Sam Liddell, James Simon and Nash Johnston. The band united for a common cause to revive what is considered by most to be the golden age of popular music of the 1960’s, a time of peace, love and pushing the limits of the human experience. In essence the group considers they are, in their own unpretentious way, ‘carrying the torch’ for a bygone era that is still both celebrated and missed.

First heard on the airwaves of Noosa Community Radio, The Curves crosses the generational barrier and were greatly received by guests and patrons with the offer of more gigs at the Noosa Yacht and Rowing Club in the New Year. Noosa Community Radio proudly supports local artists and gives the opportunity for local musicians to be heard on radio.

The night also boasted great entertainment from station personnel with performances from local OZ music duo PJ Party and our treasurer, Sue Matthews.
