NCR Reports on the 6 September Save the Mary-GetUp! Climate Torch Relay Event
by Diet Simon, 10 September 2008
If the Mary River in the Sunshine Coast’s hinterland is dammed as proposed by the Queensland government, hundreds of thousands of acres, some of the best farmland in Australia, would be lost; thousands of people living on it, displaced; globally unique animal and plant species, extinguished; and major Aboriginal heritage, obliterated. 150 kms by road further north, at Hervey Bay, where the Mary joins the sea, priceless, world heritage listed natural treasure would be wrecked.
On 6 September, about 500 anti-dam protesters (SMRCG) ran a stretch of the Climate Torch Relay, now moving across Australia, in an action organised by the democracy activism group, GetUp! (http://www.climatetorch.com/).
Diet Simon captured the event and the many local voices for his weekly show “All Over the Place” on Wednesday 10 September.
Take a look at our photos and audio commentary below.
Diet also spoke with many locals to hear how they feel about the dam and their personal views. Click here to access the recordings via our Local Voices podcast.
