Last year, the Australia Zoo Wildlife Warriors treated 8,600 native animals for free. Treating that number of animals requires such enormous amount of money that the hospital is almost becoming a victim of its own success. To find out more or to offer your help, go to Wildlifewarriors. Their fundraising manager, Murray Munro, talks to Mark Rodriquez about what they do and what they need.

Supermarket duopoly wins in Coolum

July 14th, 2011 · Community, Interviews, Podcasts

After 25 years in Coolum, Mel and Gill Luke’s IGA is about to close. This is because Coles has bought the site for an extraordinary amount of money, way above its market value, and not surprisingly, refused to renew their lease. Mel and Gill own other IGA stores at Noosa, Cooroy, Caloundra, Buderim and Glasshouse, which is a blessing for their employees. A sad end to an era for the Luke’s and their community in Coolum. Once again the anti-competitive practices of the major supermarkets have won the day. Mark Rodriquez talks with Mel Luke.

July 14th, 2011 · Community, Interviews, Podcasts

Approximately 20,000 greyhounds are bred in Australia every year and less than half that number actually make it to the track. The remainder that actually do, are also destroyed when they are no longer able to race; usually by the age of 3 or 4. But greyhounds really do make great pets. Katrina Koutsellis is the vice president of Friends of the Hound. She and one of her hounds, Rolf, talk with Mark Rodriquez.
